National Playday 2009 - Birmingham City Centre
For the last few years, BPCN have participated in the events held in the City as part of the National Playday celebrations.
In keeping with the theme of ‘Make Time’, this year a model Big (BPCN) Ben Time Capsule was set up in Victoria Square, and children were asked to form pictures of their play memories from a range of craft recycled materials which were then put into clear wallets and used to form a collage to decorate the model Big Ben. Photographs of children who had their face painted as a clock face where also used to decorate the four sides of the clock. This activity was so successful, that by the end of the day over 300 children had helped to decorate our model Big Ben. The model was then moved to Birmingham’s Millennium Point to be put on public display until October.

Play Day Event
BPCN held its play day last year on Friday 7th August 2009 at Birmingham Wheels in Saltley. This event was organised for children aged 5-13 and was extremely successful.
The theme for this year’s celebrations was ‘Make Time’.
Activities included:
- Skittles
- Obstacle course
- Giant jenga
- Puzzle zone
- Parachutes
- Karting
- Limbo dancing
- Bouncy castle
- OGiant jenga
- Wall climbing
- Bike and unicycle riding
- Skateboards and skate trucks
And just in case the children got bored there was even a DJ, a wood carver a tuck shop, and an ice cream van!
A total of 167 children and staff attended excluding BPCN staff and the Birmingham Wheels staff and volunteers.
Staff and children all enjoyed themselves and there was a lot of positive feedback. Golden moments of the day included the skating race at the end. Everyone even joined in with the dancing! It was a lovely environment and everyone enjoyed the fun, sun and activities.
At the end of the day, to mark this year’s playday theme, BPCN handed out small orange body-shaped digital clocks which had the BPCN logo on, to all the children, together with a medal for taking part in all the fun.
BPCN would like to say a big thank you to all the Birmingham Wheels staff and volunteers that helped to make the day one of BPCN’s most successful playdays.

Conkers
On Friday 8th August 2008 Birmingham PlayCare Network held a play day at Conkers (National Forest which is an award winning attraction with a unique mix of indoor and outdoor activities).
The play day was open to all its active members, 16 clubs secured places and took part and all had an enjoyable experience. Clubs participated in a mud monster activity where children had to walk through various habitats at Conkers and hunt for minibeasts and larger wildlife. Then they learnt about their environment, food chain and so and were then given mud to mould their chosen creature. Clubs also engaged in 3 other discovery zones such as the tree top walk, waterside and the discovery centre. There were also assault courses, train rides and lakeside walks available. All the clubs that attended said they had a very good time, staff and children. The children enjoyed the outdoor activities the best, exploring nature and taking part in the assault course.
Quotes from the day:
‘I liked building the den shelter, everything I did was good’
‘I loved the fishing and looking at the bugs’
‘I love playing in the scary bit’
