BPCN invited over 50 play workers to take part at the NIA. The day was hosted by the award winning Blue and White Rope Skippers.
The practical session outlined the health benefits of skipping and different skipping techniques.
Childcare workers city wide were given tips on how to transfer the skills they acquired during the session to the children who access their childcare provision.
Emma Payne, BPCN’s Business Development Manager commented; “Skipping is fantastic form of exercise and good fun; we are keen for childcare providers to use the new skills they acquire during BPCN’s event to promote healthier lifestyles amongst children”.
With physical inactivity doubling the risk of coronary heart disease, the British Heart Foundation is highlighting skipping as an ideal form of exercise for children and a great solution for play providers, schools and families to use as part of the physical activities children participate in.
The BHF is trying to address the growing problem of childhood inactivity; they recommend that children and young people aged 5-18 years should participate in physical activity of moderate intensity for at least one hour a day.
The British Heart Foundation’s, Fundraising Volunteer Manager, Donna Stokes says; “Skipping is an excellent form of cardio-vascular activity and it also promotes bone health, co-ordination, rhythm and timing. It’s a great way of showing children that keeping fit can be good fun.”
I am writing this letter to thank BPCN for putting on your course (jump rope) on 25h February.
We enjoyed the day enormously, and we thank you for inviting us to attend.
We went back and we did skipping with the children. They loved doing the double dutch and every day since a group of them have been doing it on a daily basis.
If it was not for the session i really do not think they would have been so enthusiastic – the ropes are brilliant.
Thank you from the staff and from the children.

National Playday 2009 - Birmingham City Centre
For the last few years, BPCN have participated in the events held in the City as part of the National Playday celebrations.
In keeping with the theme of ‘Make Time’, this year a model Big (BPCN) Ben Time Capsule was set up in Victoria Square, and children were asked to form pictures of their play memories from a range of craft recycled materials which were then put into clear wallets and used to form a collage to decorate the model Big Ben. Photographs of children who had their face painted as a clock face where also used to decorate the four sides of the clock. This activity was so successful, that by the end of the day over 300 children had helped to decorate our model Big Ben. The model was then moved to Birmingham’s Millennium Point to be put on public display until October.

Play Day Event
BPCN held its play day last year on Friday 7th August 2009 at Birmingham Wheels in Saltley. This event was organised for children aged 5-13 and was extremely successful.
The theme for this year’s celebrations was ‘Make Time’.
Activities included:
- Skittles
- Obstacle course
- Giant jenga
- Puzzle zone
- Parachutes
- Karting
- Limbo dancing
- Bouncy castle
- OGiant jenga
- Wall climbing
- Bike and unicycle riding
- Skateboards and skate trucks
And just in case the children got bored there was even a DJ, a wood carver a tuck shop, and an ice cream van!
A total of 167 children and staff attended excluding BPCN staff and the Birmingham Wheels staff and volunteers.
Staff and children all enjoyed themselves and there was a lot of positive feedback. Golden moments of the day included the skating race at the end. Everyone even joined in with the dancing! It was a lovely environment and everyone enjoyed the fun, sun and activities.
At the end of the day, to mark this year’s playday theme, BPCN handed out small orange body-shaped digital clocks which had the BPCN logo on, to all the children, together with a medal for taking part in all the fun.
BPCN would like to say a big thank you to all the Birmingham Wheels staff and volunteers that helped to make the day one of BPCN’s most successful playdays.
